An Evening with Barry Lopez was a Huge Success!

Barry and JoeThe McKenzie River Trust would like to thank everyone for helping us celebrate our 20th anniversary by attending or supporting our fundraising event at the Hult Center’s Soreng Theater in Eugene on May 8th.  Nature and Community on the McKenzie River--An Evening with Barry Lopez, was a great success with over 400 attendees.

Over the course of the evening, we were treated to a lyrical tour of the McKenzie and other rivers, the larger world, and some of the life history of one of the most accomplished natural and cultural history writers today.  Ultimately, the evening brought us all back home, to appreciate fully the treasure of lands and waters that define our region by the places we live, work, and play.  The programs of the McKenzie River Trust rely on that recognition, and the commitment of hundreds of people working to ensure that our children’s grandchildren are able to enjoy that legacy like we do today. (To read more click here)

2009 Volunteer Tree Planting Group Events on Green Island

OSUOn February 7, 2009, the Lutheran Campus Ministry from Oregon State University came down to Green Island as apart of an upcoming conference, To Swim with the Salmon: Spirituality and Ecojustice in the Pacific Northwest.  Students spent the morning learning about MRT, Green Island and floodplain restoration.  The group then focused on planting native trees and shrubs along the historic McKenzie River channel.

For more information on the To Swim with the Salmon: Spirituality and Ecojustice in the Pacific Northwest Conference please visit Swim with Salmon 2009.

U of OStudents from the University of Oregon’s Geography Department enjoyed a sunny weekend afternoon (Saturday, February 21) planting hundreds of native trees and shrubs along the historic McKenzie River channel.  Formerly an earthen levee preventing high water onto the floodplain, the levee was removed in 2007 by MRT.  Thanks to the U of O Geography students, native species such as snowberry, ninebark, bigleaf maple and Oregon ash will once again flourish along the bank.

Girl ScoutsOn Sunday, February 22, members of Girl Scout Troop 20375 came ready to plant trees despite the return of winter’s wet weather.  Aside from working hard in muddy conditions and completing the tasks necessary to achieve the “tree planting patch”, the Scouts comprised of grades 1-3, enjoyed looking for worms and throwing rocks into the Willamette River.

Funds for riparian and floodplain forest plantings on Green Island were provided by a grant from the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board and funds from Bonneville Environmental Agency.

11/17 Trout Unlimited Chapter 678 Pitches In With Green Island Restoration

Trout Planting Members from Trout Unlimited Chapter 678: McKenzie River and Upper Willamette helped plant 250 native trees and shrubs along a historic side-channel of the Willamette River.  The project included improving the connection of the channel with the mainstem Willamette, increasing habitat with the addition of large wood to the channel, removal of a flood controlled bank, and planting native trees, shrubs and grasses.  With funds from the TU’s First Annual McKenzie River Two-Fly Tournament and a grant from the Pacific Salmon Council, the project will provide better habitat for native salmonids; specifically spring Chinook.
